Why the start is harder than the middle

Ten minutes is short enough that starting costs nothing. You don’t have to decide whether you have the energy for the whole task — you only have to agree to ten minutes of it.

That’s the whole trick. Most of the resistance sits at the beginning, not in the middle. Once the timer is running, the decision is already made, and stopping takes more effort than continuing.

If you get to the end and want to stop — stop. The ten minutes still happened, and the task is ten minutes smaller than it was.
